The Mental Health Counselor position is a non-physician licensed behavioral health practitioner able to practice independently, who must perform services within the practitioner’s scope of practice. The services provided are expected to more effectively engage children, youth and families/caregivers who may have difficulty engaging in traditional clinic-based settings. The clinical services provided are intended to help prevent the progression of behavioral health needs through early identification and intervention and may be provided to children/youth/adolescents in need of assessment for whom behavioral health conditions have not yet been diagnosed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Be a vital member within an interdisciplinary team
Responsibility will include providing a mental health diagnosis for child/youth
Provide services with the intension to treat, correct, or ameliorate a delay or problem in developmental functioning and healthy relationships for children/youth
Ensure that service delivery is in a trauma informed, culturally and linguistically competent manner
Conduct a Licensed Evaluation (Comprehensive Assessment) to identify a child/youth individual’s behavioral strengths and weaknesses, problems, and service needs
Responsibility includes the identification of services and practices medically necessary to meet the child/youth’s behavioral health needs, which may include other Children and Family Treatment and Support Services (CFTSS)
Provide a treatment plan which will describe the child/youth’s condition and services needed for the current episode of care, detailing the scope/practices to be provided, expected outcome, and expected frequency and duration of the treatment for each provider
Provide Psychotherapy (Counseling) utilizing therapeutic communication and interaction for alleviating symptoms or functional limitations associated with a child/youths diagnosed behavioral health disorder
Responsible for Crisis Intervention Activities if the child-youth experiences psychiatric, behavioral or situational distress in which the Mental Health Counselor will be contacted as the treatment provider, to provide the necessary interventions in crisis circumstances, such as crisis triage by phone, crisis off site in person, or crisis complex care follow up
Maintain professional cross collaboration with various departments within the agency; and make relative contacts with important referral sources within the community
