New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award-winning not-for-profit agency in Midtown Manhattan, with a satellite Bronx office, dedicated to serving children and families with medical complexity, chronic health conditions, significant disabilities and behavioral challenges. Description of Responsibilities:
Under the supervisor of the Director of Resources, Advocacy & Homelessness Prevention, NAC’s Housing Coordinator will:
•Assist clients with their housing search via the internet & NAC contacts. This includes helping to schedule meetings with Brokers and/or landlords and attending those meeting with clients.
•Build and maintain a list of Landlords, Brokers and housing complexes in all 5 borough and assist these clients to secure housing. This will include in-person advocacy and relationship building in all 5 boroughs, “cold calls” and walk-ins meetings with Brokers and apartment complexes.
•Assist clients with applications to HRA’s Shelter Allowance, Family Housing & Eviction Prevention Services (FHEPS), ACS Prevention Subsidy, NAC housing grants and other housing programs.
•Maintain up to date knowledge of NYC’s various housing programs including NYCHA, Section 8, Supportive Housing, Housing Lottery Program, Mitchell-Lama, and market-rate apartments.
•Laisse with HPD, HUD, NYCHA, Homebase as needed.
•Assist youth in the Foster Care & Adoption Department with the housing applications, advocacy and follow up to ensure they receive housing before they age or sign out of Foster Care. This includes assistance via NYCHA, Supportive Housing and Market Rate Apartment as well as liaising with NAC’s Grant coordinator & Resource Specialist to ensure the youth has furniture and any other emergency housing needs.
