Description
New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an award winning child welfare, health and social service agency in NYC with 35 years of experience in serving children with special needs and their families. NAC is currently seeking qualified candidates to work in our grant-funded Court-Involved Youth Mental Health Initiative, called YouthStrong.

•        Location: Midtown Manhattan (37 West 26th Street, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10010) and/or Bronx
•        (1775 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10453) offices; Currently hybrid schedule of work from home and in-office/field
•        Department: Youth Development Services
•        Hours: 25-35 hours per week, including approximately 2 evenings per week (5-7pm) and Saturdays during the day

•Assist YouthStrong Social Worker with programming duties for YouthStrong, a youth development program providing support to individuals ages 14-24-years-old vulnerable of involvement in the juvenile justice system.
•Assist with planning creative educational and clinical agendas for group activities and discussion groups centered around topics relevant to teens and young adults, such as positive youth development, sexual health, social justice issues, plans for after high school, and engagement with peers. (Groups are currently meeting both virtually and in-person, outdoors.)
•Co-facilitate adolescent and young adult discussion groups.
•Engage adolescents and young adults with special medical and mental healthcare needs, including clients involved in the foster care system and preventive services.
•Assist with developing and planning a variety of pro-social activities and field trips.
•Conduct intake interviews with parents/guardians and prospective clients to gather information about family history, medical conditions, and client’s behavioral patterns to assess if they will be a good fit for the program and to best prepare for work with them.
•Conduct home visits as needed to conduct outreach and complete intake assessments.
•Conduct Mental Health Screenings: CDI Children’s Depression Inventory; BASC Behavior Assessment Systems for Children; Trauma History Questionnaire; and CRAFFT
•Under the guidance of Supervisor, evaluate findings from the mental health screenings and make referrals as necessary to further support individuals.
•Assist with planning agendas and co-facilitating parent education groups centered around building positive parenting skills and educating about adolescent development.
•Record notes following client engagement, group activities and discussions.
•Participate in case reviews and team meetings to collaborate about participants and ensure they are receiving appropriate services.
•Serve as leader of youth groups when the YouthStrong Social Worker is unavailable: Manage per-diem staff and interns on directives and ensuring staff are appropriately maintaining the safety and well-being of each youth participant.
•Perform administrative duties including making weekly reminder phone calls to families, putting in transportation requests, entering records into Excel database and NAC’s online portal, and preparing materials for weekly groups.
•Commitment to work on Saturdays for youth group activities and discussion groups.

Preferred Skills:
•Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.

Skills
Required Education and Experience:
•Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Education, or related field
•Experience working with youth with special medical and mental healthcare needs
•Experience engaging parents and caregivers
•Excellent organizational skills and computer skills in Word, Excel and web-based information searches.
•Ability and willingness to work a varying schedule that includes Saturdays and some evenings.
