Description
The Violence Intervention Program, Inc. (VIP) is the only culturally specific non-profit organization in New York City serving Latinx survivors of domestic and sexual violence, the vast majority of whom are immigrants. Created as a grassroots response to intimate partner violence and sexual assault, VIP has always centered survivors in its leadership and has worked to create a community of staff that reflects the rich national, ethnic and racial diversity of the communities it serves. VIP operates three community-based social service programs, two residential shelter and housing programs, a 24/7 hotline, innovative economic justice and sexual violence programs, and a robust communications and outreach team. The Sexual Violence Project Counselor/Advocate provides trauma-informed, supportive services to survivors of sexual violence, including co-facilitation of group healing practices and provides short-term individual counseling services. The Counselor/Advocate will work closely with the Project Manager, counselor advocate, and survivors themselves to identify culturally relevant healing modalities for Latina/o/x survivors of sexual violence, many of whom are immigrants. This position works with VIP’s Communications & Outreach team to identify key partners and establish relationships to improve coordinated responses to sexual violence. The Counselor/Advocate also provides community-based preventive education and raises awareness about VIP resources. This position plays a key role in training survivors, staff and volunteers to deepen their understanding about trauma responses, engaging survivors, and resources related to sexual violence. The ideal candidate is a compassionate advocate with a demonstrated commitment to providing trauma-informed and survivor-centered practices with survivors of sexual violence. They embrace values of diversity, cultural humility, teamwork, and community empowerment.
