The Substance Abuse Counselor provides direct services to clients of the Bill Wilson Center, primarily for youth and young adults, ages 12-25 yr. The Substance Abuse Counselor will work closely as part of a multi-disciplinary team that provides comprehensive services that include emergency shelter, counseling, mental health and drop in center services to homeless and at risk of homeless individuals and families. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Facilitate Wellness groups and 1:1 substance abuse counseling
• Provides substance abuse education to youth at risk of using substances
• Facilitates 7 Challenges groups through BWC programs
• Collaborates and advocates for needs of client as part of multi-disciplinary team
• Conduct substance abuse assessments and develop individualized care plans in collaboration with other providers
• Provide referrals and linkages to services specific to client’s needs.
• Provide follow-up to ensure services are obtained.
• Develop collaborative relationships with community partners.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; and two to four year’s related experience and/or certification as CADC or addiction specialist with minimum of 2 years related experience providing substance abuse education and treatment options. Experience providing services to clients of various racial, ethnic, socioeconomic backgrounds or sexual identity who are overrepresented in homeless populations as well as working in different cultural environments. An understanding of humility and respect for working with homeless youth and families. Excellent communication skills - must be personable and informative when presenting BWC programs and services. Driving is a requirement of the job (valid California driver’s license with access to a personal vehicle that can be used for company business and current personal automobile insurance. Current CPR and First Aid Certification required (or complete within 30 days of hire). Fingerprinting/background check as required by the Department of Justice and/or Title XXII regulations. TB test required.
