The Career Readiness & Mentorship Coordinator will support youth in Foster Care connect to meaningful careers and prepare them for economic self-sufficiency. This will include providing youth internships within SCO that will give them hands-on job experience as well as support and guidance from trained mentors as they continue their education and develop career goals. Youth will be matched one-to-one with trained SCO Mentors to facilitate successful internship experiences. The Mentors will provide valuable insights based on their career experience, educational backgrounds, and challenges they have faced on a professional and personal level.
The Coordinator will also conduct formal individualized career assessments and facilitate career readiness workshops that will help youth:
· Identify a career goal and develop a career and education plan based on individual strengths and interests.
· Gain the knowledge and skills needed to transition successfully into the world of work (e.g., how to get jobs, succeed in the workplace, and understand workplace policies).
· Learn strategies to enhance their workplace relationships and manage challenges (e.g., how to request a workplace accommodation, and how to manage conflict in the workplace).
The combined focus on career readiness and mentorship will play an integral role in strengthening a culture of reciprocal support and mutual learning amongst youth, mentors and staff throughout SCO.
The Coordinator will also strengthen, expand, and institutionalize partnerships with key Foundations and Workforce and Employment providers. The Coordinator will work in close collaboration with Education & Youth Specialists and Casework staff.
Other skills and requirements:
· Vocational/Career-Readiness/Employment Experience.
· Experience working in Foster Care.
. Will work out of multiple sites including Jamaica, NY, Brooklyn, NY & Brentwood, NY
· Experience working with youth. A strong sense of empathy and ability to respond to the unique developmental needs of youth in different stages of maturation. Ability to work with youth who have histories of chemical dependency, mental illness, neglect, physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, different cultural backgrounds, and varying socioeconomics statuses.
· Ability to work competently, compassionately, and without judgment with youth who may identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, or who may be in different stages of discovering or disclosing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
· Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
· Experience facilitating trainings and group work.
· Strong time management skills, diligence, resilience.
· Ability to work individually and as a team across diverse sectors.
· Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with CONNECTIONS preferred.
· Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.
