New Directions In Living provides services for adults with developmental disabilities who live in their own home or apartment, or with family. We are looking for individuals who have great people skills and a passion for assisting others with disabilities and special needs. We are looking for individuals who are creative in implementing a variety of activities and a commitment to helping others learn daily life skills such as shopping, cooking, domestic skills, social and communication skills, connecting with community resources such as educational, recreational and leisure time activities. Our clients live in the communities of Los Angeles, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, Culver City, Santa Monica and we support them in their homes and in the community. Must have the ability to work independently and work flexible hours. Driving is required for this position. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus but not mandatory. Part time but may lead to a full-time position. Candidates must be able to work independently, and flexible hours. Schedule and hours worked are based on the needs and goals of each client.
Duties and Responsibilities
With minimal supervision provide training to improve client’s community functioning. Be able to advocate for clients and assist them in a variety of community environments (use of buses, libraries, Social Security Office, housing resources).
Conduct community-based activities for clients and provide transportation to/from medical appointments, shopping for groceries, clothing.
Provide training activities to assist clients with learning how to cook and prepare simple meals, menu planning, household maintenance, laundry activities and other supports as needed.
Monitor medications and verify that they are being taken as prescribed, assist with timely refills.
Provide ongoing monitoring of client’s progress via required documentation (case notes, progress reports).
Participate in scheduled staff meetings and attend client related meetings as necessary.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience: Prefer 1 year previous experience in a related field but will train the right candidate.
Good verbal and written communication skills
Exhibit good time management skills, patience and flexibility
Current California driver’s license, maintain a reliable vehicle, proof of current auto insurance and registration, and a good driving record. Ability to transport clients if necessary.
Pass Live Scan clearance/background check
Have access to a computer, typing skills, cell phone, access to email
First Aid /CPR Certification (may be obtained within 90 days of employment)
Ability to work independently
