•Willingness to travel up to 5 days per month

Job Description:
Support GLSEN’s efforts in community-based organizing to address anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling, and harassment in K-12 schools. The Community Initiatives Associate provides direct support to community-based GLSEN Chapters to ensure that their work effectively supports GLSEN’s mission and strategic plan. The Community Initiatives Associate also works with the rest of the department to ensure the growth and sustainability of gay-straight alliances (GSAs) and similar student clubs and to support individual advocates across the country.

Responsibilities:
•Provide direct support to 10-12 community-based GLSEN Chapters
Provide continual assessment of each Chapter’s progress on their work plans and provide assistance and advice in order to help Chapters achieve their goals
Assist Chapters in meeting GLSEN reporting requirements such as quarterly financials and annual accreditation
Coordinate Chapter needs with appropriate GLSEN departments including Education, Communications, Development, Operations and Public Policy
Participate in Community Initiatives Department oversight and review of Chapter program delivery, finances and governance
Assess Chapters’ resource and training needs and work with appropriate GLSEN staff to develop and deliver resources and training
Support members of the National Jump-Start Leadership Team
•Facilitate the work of existing and newly established GSA’s through online and other information systems that connect them with GLSEN’s safe schools organizing efforts
Assist GSA’s in making connections with other community organizations that will assist in their development and collaborative efforts
Support the formation and development of GSAs individually and through provision of resources developed by GLSEN
•Engage with individuals, both youth and adult, within and outside of the school community who wish to improve school climate through work either locally or at the state level
Respond as appropriate to incoming requests and connect individuals to other departments, Chapters and other community organizations working on safe schools issues in their area and across the country
•Work as a team with Community Initiatives Department staff
Assist with on-going departmental projects, planning and function
Play lead role on selected projects and assist in overall departmental planning and development
Maintain accurate contact information for Chapter and other contacts and monitor contact databases for accuracy
Participate in management of GLSEN’s online presence in collaboration with Communications Department to ensure ongoing connections to community-based advocates
Document community-based advocate success stories and create other materials for GLSEN internal and external communication vehicles
Provide some administrative assistance
Other duties as assigned related to the department or as GLSEN’s representative
