New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an innovative child welfare agency located in Midtown Manhattan, which provides services to medically fragile children and their families. NAC is currently seeking applicants for a Part Time Educational Advocate.

Summary: Collaborates with DOE staff, B2H coworkers and case planners to ensure that children are appropriately placed or classified, and receiving the services to which they are entitled or that are mandated in their IEPs. Provides a range of group and individual services to clients in the B2H program.

Key Responsibilities:                 
Direct advocacy in the community and with the educational system or others regarding children’s’ disabilities and needs related to health care issues.

Participates in the development of service plan goals and objectives for youth and family related to the Waiver Service Provider role.
Reports on progress towards these at service plan reviews and team meetings.

Advocacy training for children and/or caregivers, including during community and school transitions.

Additional Responsibilities, Depending on Experience:
Advises others involved in or supervising complex advocacy work.

Provides additional services when necessary, including prevocational support, crisis avoidance, and any others that may be assigned

Master’s degree in Education preferred. Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology or related field required.
Knowledge of the NYC Department of Education, and prior advocacy experience strongly preferred.
Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule based on individual client and family needs.
Two or more years of experience working with developmentally disabled, medically fragile, or emotionally disturbed youth required.
Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
